Glass Beadmaking at The Gallery

Introduction Into Lampwork Glass Bead Making:
The Basics
First Class- Learning about glass bead making and how to control the glass.
¨ Safety tips.
¨ Tools and Equipment- what it is and how to use it.
¨ Workspace set-up and ergonomics tips.
¨ The properties of glass.
¨ Pulling basic stringer and frit stringer, attaching rods to each other.
¨ Making a round bead.
¨ Adding color to your beads using frit.
Additional Classes- Learning techniques and styles. This is a comprehensive list of possible techniques that will be covered as time allows. The course will be tailored to the individual student, covering techniques and ideas that each person is most interested in. There may not be time to cover all of these techniques.
¨ Learning how to make some basic shapes such as bicones, flat beads and tubes.
¨ Adding dots and masking pattern techniques.
¨ Plunging- trapping an air bubble in your bead.
¨ Basic tool use- graphite pads, marvers, mashers, scissors, picks, etc.
¨ Making leaves.
¨ Making lines and stripes using stringer.
¨ Raking, feathering and manipulating glass to form patterns.
¨ Making twisty (twisted glass) to use as decoration on beads.
¨ Some simple floral designs.
¨ Making disk-shaped beads.
Second Course- Techniques in Depth
A second course will also be offered for students who are looking to learn more skills. Students in this course need to have taken the first course, or have previous experience working with glass over a torch. Practicing techniques learned in the first course for a period of several weeks is highly recommended. Some of these techniques may be touched on in the previous course.

Individual Classes- What you want to know
For those of you who have lampworking experience and would like to learn specific techniques, individual classes can be arranged. Please call The Gallery and speak to Laurie to see if what you would like to learn is available as a class. These classes can range from 2-4 hours.
